Differential Hemodynamic Responses in Cortex to Horizontal Visual Scanning Measured with fNIRS
The visual system enables us to perceive our environment and perform functions such as safe navigation. An example of a critical component of effective perception is gaze stability, which relies on the vestibular system. The vestibular system is also essential for the perception and control of self-movement. This study explores the behavior of cortical areas associated with these systems, examining differences in hemodynamic responses under conditions when visual attention is present versus when is absent, using fNIRS to assess brain activity. The experiment involved 19 participants, allowing for a clear distinction between these two conditions. The results revealed specific cortical areas exhibiting different patterns of activity during task performance.
