Design and Implementation of a Low Cost, Low Profile, Multipurpose FMCW RADAR Transceiver

This paper presents the design and implementation of an FMCW transceiver for multiple Radar applications including collision avoidance, altimeter, intrusion sensor and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imaging etc. The transceiver has been designed with low cost Commercial of the Shelf (COTS) ICs on a simple double sided PCB. The calculated range is up to 1 km with a tunable frequency and bandwidth in S-band. The module has been developed in a compact size and kept lightweight for installation on different platforms including a drone. Moreover, the module can operate independently on a 12 V DC battery and can be interfaced directly with a PC for real-time processing. The module has been tested in lab with delay lines as well as with antennas and target detections have been achieved for anticipated applications.
