Digital Rocks in the Energy Transition
Summary This paper will outline some of the recent work on digital rock technology at Imperial College London with an emphasis on applications in the energy transition: carbon dioxide sequestration and hydrogen storage. We will demonstrate how the use of pore-scale imaging has discovered new phenomena and uncovered new insights into these processes. Specifically we will explore the mixed-wet state as optimal for flow and recovery, intermittency and non-linear flow at moderate flow rates, the combined effect of displacement and reaction, and the impact of Ostwald ripening on trapping and multiphase flow properties.
