Improved Geothermal Drilling Solutions Utilizing Nanomaterials and Graphene Oxide as Additives to Overcome HPHT Challenges
Summary Among clean energy sources, geothermal sources of energy are considered as potentially sustainable, efficient and technically feasible, while also providing economic benefits and environmental advantages. However, given the extreme pressures and the wide range of temperatures (HPHT) encountered in Geothermal wells during drilling, it is essential to be able to precisely manage the fluids properties and pressures to ensure safe operations. The use of novel additives can enhance the properties of conventional drilling fluids, and several works by Bessenouci et. al. (2014) , Abraham et. al. (2023) , Yang et. al. (2022) has discussed this. Drilling fluids can especially benefit from the addition of nanoparticles, especially graphene oxide and nano silica, which improve rheological characteristics, lowers friction, and improves fluid performance in general. Use of such additives reduced visosity and coefficient of friction, while helping maintain consistency over time and at varied temperatures – which can lead to less wear on drilling equipment, and in turn improve productivity, operational performance and geothermal drilling economics.
