Geostatistical Modeling and Optimization of Subsurface Reservoir Properties: A Permeability Estimation Example
Summary This study presents a Dart-based application integrated with the QASR reservoir simulator to enhance geostatistical modeling in subsurface reservoir simulations, supporting optimization of resource extraction and reservoir behavior assessment. Using Kriging techniques and variogram analysis, the application generates continuous property maps that capture spatial variability and account for anisotropy in key reservoir properties, such as porosity and permeability. Its user-friendly GUI simplifies parameter selection, variogram modeling (with plots and maps), and data visualization, supporting four Kriging types (simple, ordinary, universal, and co-kriging). A case study on aquifer permeability distribution from limited well data demonstrates the methodology, with cross-validation and error metrics such as MAE and RMSE confirming model reliability. By combining refined interpolation with data analytics and anisotropy considerations, this tool enhances reservoir characterization and strategic management, offering a valuable resource for geological and environmental studies.
