Chemical recognition using metal-organic framework-based luminescence materials

Nowadays, the invention of new substances has led to significant environmental pollution and chemical misuse, posing serious threats to both environmental health and human well-being. Human activities and industrial processes have accelerated the release of pollutants into the air, water, and soil, adversely impacting ecosystems, climate, and public health. Addressing these issues necessitates the instant and efficient recognition of pollutants and chemicals. Chemical recognition is crucial across various scientific fields, involving the selective identification and binding of specific molecules from complex mixtures. This process is essential in both natural processes and technological applications and is facilitated by artificial receptors and recognition systems utilizing various interactions for high specificity and affinity. Luminescent sensing, an advanced technique in analytical chemistry, leverages the optical properties of luminescent materials for highly sensitive and selective detection of analytes. Advances in nanotechnology and materials science have further enhanced analyte recognition capabilities through novel materials especially metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). These materials offer customizable platforms with tunable properties, and their luminescent properties enable sensitive and selective detection methods for various analytes. This review introduces the luminescence and response mechanisms of MOF-based luminescent sensing materials and explores the development processes for chemical recognition, highlighting advancements in recognizing a range of analytes from simple to complex and from single to multiple targets. • Summarize the luminescence and response mechanisms for MOF-based luminescence sensing briefly • Conclude the development processes for chemical recognition • Focus on the phenomenon that analytes change from simple to complex • Focus on the phenomenon that analytes change from single to multiple
