JAMES: A COMMENTARY. By Joel B.Green. New Testament Library. Louisville: Westminster John Knox Press, 2025. Pp. xxix + 206. Hardback, $55.00.
This commentary promises good pastoral and exegetical fruit for readers of James, whose voice Green rightly insists needs to be heard more.Green sees no decisive reason not to read this as a diaspora letter stemming from James of Jerusalem in the 50s CE.Though not classically theological, James is a "practical theologian" addressing believers amid the press of divergent values and commitments that manifest in hypocrisy and competition.James exposes these practices and redirects believers toward God and love in their outlook and behavior.Green's commentary is eminently readable and clear. It is especially strong in noting and describing socioeconomic realities addressed and assumed in the letter-the commentary on 2:1-7 is incredibly well done.
