The growing concern of human metapneumovirus
Human metapneumovirus (hMPV) has recently emerged as a significant respiratory pathogen, garnering increased recognition due to advancements in molecular diagnostic tools that have enhanced its detection and characterization. Traditionally, hMPV has been associated with severe manifestations in pediatric populations, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals. However, hMPV-related pneumonia in immunocompetent adults remains a relatively underexplored area. This letter aims to underscore the global health importance of hMPV by highlighting a case report and a recent outbreak study. It also emphasizes the necessity for heightened awareness, rapid diagnostics, and the potential development of vaccines to mitigate the impact of this pathogen.
