Multifunctional 3-cyanopyridine compounds: synthesis based on a tandem reaction with 100% atom economy and their applications

A NaOH-promoted tandem reaction under mild, metal-free conditions converts benzopyranitriles and pyrrolidines to multifunctional 3-cyanopyridines for fluorescence and antibacterial use with 100% atom economy and 97% yield.
