GLP-1 agonists and cardiovascular endpoints in obesity without diabetes
A recent meta-analysis found that the use of GLP-1 agonists by overweight or obese patients without diabetes resulted in a statistically significant reduction of the risk of cardiovascular endpoints, with a number needed to treat (NNT) of 44. These findings, however, mostly concern semaglutide. Common adverse effects of all GLP-1 agonists include an elevated risk of gastrointestinal and gallbladder-related symptoms. Based on this new evidence, when can which GLP-1 agonist be considered, to reduce the risk of cardiovascular endpoints in patients without diabetes mellitus?
