Power-Efficient Single-Input Star Outphasing Amplifier with Large Output Backoff: Invited Paper

A new three-transistor outphasing power amplifier (OPA) with a star topology is presented. It features two output backoff (OBO) power levels like the three-transistor Doherty PA but achieves a flatter high efficiency between peak and its 9.54 dB OBO. A low-power two-transistor RF outphasing driver for generating the three required input RF signals from a single RF input is also proposed for driving the Star OPA.

Abstract

A new three-transistor outphasing power amplifier (OPA) with a star topology is presented. It features two output backoff (OBO) power levels like the three-transistor Doherty PA but achieves a flatter high efficiency between peak and its 9.54 dB OBO. A low-power two-transistor RF outphasing driver for generating the three required input RF signals from a single RF input is also proposed for driving the Star OPA.
