ELSP-MA: An Efficient Lightweight and Security-Enhanced Privacy-Preserving Message Authentication Scheme for VANETs

Communication between vehicles via the wireless channel is faced with the hidden risk of privacy leakage in the vehicular ad-hoc network(VANET). Due to the limited computing resources of the on-board unit and the characteristics of highspeed driving for vehicles, the message processing performance of existing privacy protection authentication schemes are difficult to meet the needs of applications. To address such problems, we propose an efficient lightweight and security-enhanced message authentication scheme for VANETs to protect transmitted traffic messages. In this scheme, in terms of the resource-limited application environment, n message signatures from different vehicles are compressed into one signature, thus reducing signature verification and storage overhead for roadside units. And a cryptographic hash function is used to replace map-to-point function to reduce the computational cost of vehicles. Provides an effective traceability method for transportation bureaus to track traffic violations. In addition, it provides rigorous security proof that the proposed scheme meets the security requirements of VANETs. Comparison of computational cost analysis shows that our scheme improves performance by 54.26%
