Education Tasks of Professional Self-Governing Insurance Institutions in Light of European Challenges and National Guidelines and Strategies

<ns3:p>This article deals with education activities conducted by professional self-governing insurance institutions with respect to national and European strategies aimed at enhancing the financial competence of citizens. The role of education in shaping the ways in which insurance is perceived and in limiting the insurance gap is discussed against the background of documents published by the European Commission, the OECD/INFE as well as the National Strategy for Financial Education (KSEF). Particular emphasis is put on activities pursued by the Polish Chamber of Insurance (PIU), whose tasks to educate follow both from the Insurance and the Reinsurance Act and from the statutes. The article indicates that the PIU has the potential of taking up the role of a public partner in implementing the KSEF, and underlines the need to enhance and to formalize that role by means of legal provisions, with some de lege ferenda proposals being made by the author as regards the latter. The analysis has also some practical implications, as it discusses education campaigns which have been carried out by the PIU so far.</ns3:p>
