Cross-training Inpatient Advanced Practice Providers for Expanded Coverage

Abstract

Purpose
To develop educational objectives and modules to cross-train inpatient pediatric advanced practice providers (APPs), increase APP knowledge, expand the pool of APPs able to practice within hospital medicine, and demonstrate the effects of cross-training on overall job satisfaction.
Background
Physician shortages and increased health care access needs have resulted in the expansion of APP roles, which is associated with poor job satisfaction, role strain, burnout, and high turnover rates.
Results
Trained APPs in hospital medicine increased by 133%. Knowledge scores increased by 28%, but no significant change in job satisfaction.
Conclusion
Cross-training APPs creates an expanded coverage model with competent providers.
