Sustainable Management of Healthcare Waste in University Hospitals
Objective: To analyze the main challenges and strategies adopted by university hospitals to promote sustainable management of healthcare waste, focusing on sanitary safety, environmental sustainability, and the protection of healthcare professionals. Method: A qualitative systematic review was conducted following the PRISMA protocol, with a search in the Scopus database between 2014 and 2024, using specific descriptors and inclusion criteria that resulted in the selection and analysis of eight scientific articles. Results and Discussion: Barriers such as improper waste segregation, lack of training, and occupational risks were identified. Positive strategies include the use of clean technologies, environmental education, recyclable separation, and the adoption of sustainable practices based on Life Cycle Assessment. Research Implications: The findings highlight the urgency of integrated actions between hospitals, government, and society to improve waste management, reduce environmental impacts, and protect public health, in alignment with national policies and sustainability guidelines. Originality/Value: This study contributes by highlighting the reality of university hospitals and mapping sustainable solutions, offering support to strengthen public policies and effective practices in the hospital sector with a focus on socio-environmental responsibility.
