Use of valproic acid by fathers before conception
A post-authorisation safety study found an elevated risk of neurological developmental disorders among children of men who were using valproic acid before the conception. In view of these results, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) has recommended precautionary measures. How strong is the evidence for this association, are there any other risks, what are the benefits of valproic acid, and are the precautionary measures that are recommended by the EMA appropriate?
