COMMUNICATION BARRIERS IN THE WORK OF A SOCIAL WORKER WITH A CLIENT

The study aimed to identify the most common communication barriers that clients encounter during verbal communication with a social worker. Research methods: theoretical (classification, generalization, comparative analysis, analysis of scientific literature) and empirical (observation, description, survey) methods were used to structure the knowledge obtained, formulate conclusions regarding the most common communication barriers that clients encounter during verbal communication with a social worker. The results of the study showed that the biggest obstacle in the communication of social workers with the elderly is the use of professional terms. During the analysis in the field of verbal communication, among the most common communication barriers, we found the use of professional terms that clients often do not understand. These terms create a barrier between a client and a social worker because the client feels that the worker does not understand a client or does not take into account his experience and level of education. On the other hand, very simplified communication, even if it facilitates understanding, seems incomplete or superficial to a client. These findings show the need to adapt the language of a social worker to the needs of a client and the level of understanding. Therefore, it is of utmost importance that social workers pay special attention to using simple but clear language that would be understandable to the general public. The results of the study demonstrate that verbal communication between a social worker and a client is mostly positive, with the highest ratings being clarity of expression and appropriate pace of speech. Clients feel that social workers try to explain concepts that they do not understand and maintain an appropriate speed of speech, which improves overall communication. At the same time, it has been confirmed that clear and understandable communication increases client satisfaction and understanding, which is important for the effectiveness of social work.
