BEYOND THE SCAR: TREATING POST-SURGICAL ELBOW STIFFNESS- A CASE STUDY
Elbow stiffness is a common post-traumatic complication that can significantly impair upper limb function, especially in pediatric patients. This case study presents the rehabilitation of a 10-year-old male who developed post-surgical elbow stiffness following open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) of a medial avulsion fracture. The patient presented with restricted range of motion, pain (VAS 7), and diminished biceps reflex three weeks post-ORIF. Pre-treatment evaluation included goniometric ROM measurements and the Oxford Elbow Score (OES). A four-week physiotherapy protocol was implemented, including electrotherapy, joint mobilization, muscle energy techniques, PNF, and progressive resistance exercises. Following rehabilitation, the patient demonstrated reduced pain, improved range of motion, and functional gains as measured by OES. These improvements highlight the effectiveness of early and targeted physiotherapy in managing elbow stiffness. This case underscores the importance of a structured physiotherapy approach in restoring elbow mobility and function post-surgery. Patient motivation, early intervention, and progressive loading were critical to the successful outcome. However, long-term follow-up is necessary to assess sustained recovery and prevent recurrence.
