Topological Transitions between Skyrmions and (Anti)meron Chains in a Room‐Temperature Layered Magnet
Abstract Recent observations of topological spin textures, such as skyrmions and merons, in 2D layered magnets have garnered substantial interest in both fundamental physics and spintronic applications. However, the creation and transition of these distinct topological phases within a single‐layered system remain challenging owing to their unique formation requirements and the inherently rigid magnetic anisotropy of most layered ferromagnets. Here, the study reports a highly self‐intercalated layered system, Cr 1.9 Te₂, which features a high Curie temperature ( T c ≈ 356 K), tunable temperature‐dependent magnetic anisotropy, and the ability to host both dipolar skyrmions and (anti)meron chains. By varying the temperature and magnetic field, thermally stable skyrmions, persisting up to 345 K, can be created and subsequently transformed into (anti)meron chains. The phase transition, driven by the switch between easy‐axis and easy‐plane anisotropy, strongly depends on lamellae thickness, highlighting the balance between dipolar interactions and magnetic anisotropy. In addition, spontaneous (anti)merons coexist with skyrmions over a specific temperature range at zero field, suggesting that an appropriate anisotropy can support two topological phases. The findings establish Cr 1.9 Te₂ as a versatile platform for low‐dimensional memory devices, leveraging distinct topological phases for advanced functionality.
