Impact of dyslipidemia and diabetes mellitus on cognitive function after carotid endarterectomy
Despite significant advances in medicine, cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of morbidity and mortality. Currently, the prevalence of atherosclerosis and its complications such as ischemic (coronary) heart disease and stroke is increasing in most countries. In addition to acute complications, atherosclerotic lesions of the carotid arteries are characterized by the development of cognitive impairment and dementia. A surgical method for preventing ischemic cerebral infarction in atherosclerosis of the carotid ar teries is carotid endarterectomy. Some studies indicate that in the postoperative period, in addition to carotid artery atherosclerosis, atherosclerosis of small cerebral vessels, gender, diabetes mellitus, hypercholesterolemia, previous ischemic stroke, and body mass index correlate with a decrease in cognitive abilities.
