TO THE QUESTION OF NITROGEN FIXATION IN FUNGI

The process of nitrogen fixation carried out by free-living, associative and symbiotic, including endosymbiotic, bacteria is considered. The currently known nitrogenases of various bacteria are described. Data from a few studies indicating the ability of fungi to fix nitrogen are presented. The presence of these data does not allow us to state unequivocally that fungi, including micromycetes, are not able to fix molecular nitrogen from the air. The issue of nitrogen fixation in fungi requires additional research.

Abstract

The process of nitrogen fixation carried out by free-living, associative and symbiotic, including endosymbiotic, bacteria is considered. The currently known nitrogenases of various bacteria are described. Data from a few studies indicating the ability of fungi to fix nitrogen are presented. The presence of these data does not allow us to state unequivocally that fungi, including micromycetes, are not able to fix molecular nitrogen from the air. The issue of nitrogen fixation in fungi requires additional research.
