The effect of Saussurea costus extract on multidrug-resistant Proteus mirabilis isolated from urinary tract infections in Mosul City, Iraq
Objectiveس: Medicinal plants play a vital role in eliminating bacterial growth, as Saussurea costus xtract inhibits various bacterial species. Methods: 40 clinical samples of urinary tract infections were collected from the outpatients. Saussurea costus was extracted and the active substance was determined using the HPLC technique Results: We obtained eight bacterial isolates belonging to the Proteus spp., they showed resistance to most antibiotics except Imipenem 24 mm and Ciprofloxacin 20 mm, DNA was extracted, sequence analysis was done and a bacterial isolate was recorded in NCBI for the first time in Iraq and called Proteus mirabilis ANZ, RESIST NAL. DOXY, the aqueous extract of Saussurea costus was obtained, and from the HPLC work, we got two phenolic acids, namely apigenin 44.539 µg/ml and catechine 33.953 µg/ml, and a flavonoid compound, Kaempferol 66.047 µg/ml, and it showed a lethal effect on bacteria at 250 µl. Conclusion: The plant extract has shown the ability to kill Proteus mirabilis.
