OS CUIDADOS COM A SAÚDE BUCAL DE JOVENS E ADOLESCENTES USUÁRIOS DE ANTIDEPRESSIVOS: UMA REVISÃO LITERÁRIA
The use of antidepressants in young people has raised concerns about their safety and adverse effects, especially in relation to oral health, such as xerostomia and bruxism. A multidisciplinary approach is essential to ensure effective and safe treatment. This study reviews the literature available on the SciElo, PubMed and Google Scholar platforms, using terms such as antidepressants, adolescent health, xerostomia and bruxism, focusing on articles published between 2015 and 2025. Fifty-three articles were selected that address the impact of antidepressants, particularly selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), which have been increasingly prescribed due to the increase in cases of depression, eating disorders and stress, intensified by the pandemic. Although SSRIs are considered safer, studies on their long-term effects in adolescents are still lacking. Among the most common side effects are xerostomia and bruxism, which can cause everything from cavities and oral infections to tooth wear and temporomandibular disorders. Treatment for these conditions includes artificial saliva, salivary stimulants, bite splints, and relaxation therapies. In addition, psychotherapy and adopting healthy habits have been shown to be effective in combating youth depression. Given the increasing prescription of antidepressants, it is essential to monitor the effects on both mental and oral health in young people, and more research is needed to improve the treatment of depression in this age group.
