BOOK REVIEW: THE IRISH SHORT STORY AT THE TURN OF THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY. TRADITION, SOCIETY AND MODERNITY
Madalina Armie’s present monograph The Irish Short Story at the Turn of the Twenty-First Century. Tradition, Society and Modernity constitutes the first comprehensive book-length critical volume on this important Irish subgenre at the turn of the twenty-first century. It represents a much needed, illuminating and insightful critical approach to the Irish short story during the period under study, i.e. the Celtic Tiger, particularly between 1995 and its aftermath in 2013. The monograph wonderfully analyses the representation of the boom and after as a way to examine the exchange between reality and short fiction in contemporary Ireland. To do so, it approaches the productions of old and emergent authors writing during the period and engages critically in the aesthetic representations of the many discourses of Ireland at the time offered by these Irish authors.
