The role of millets in the management of non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus

Diabetes is a complex metabolic disorder that often leads to various chronic complications, affecting vital organs such as the kidneys, heart, eyes, and nerves. Managing diabetes effectively requires healthy dietary interventions and lifestyle modifications. A well-balanced diet for diabetic patients should include wholesome foods, high-quality proteins, unsaturated fats, complex carbohydrates, and foods rich -tamins and minerals, tailored to the individual’s specific needs. This paper aims to review the literature related to the topic to explore the potential role of millets in the dietary management and glycemic control of individuals with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM). Recent studies have highlighted the many beneficial nutrient compositions of millets, making them an excellent dietary option for diabetic patients. Millets are among the most widely cultivated crops in Asia and Africa (Ravi, 2004), valued not only for their high nutritional content but also for their anti-acidic, gluten-free properties. They are rich in polyphenols, phytochemicals (including antioxidants), dietary fiber, protein, and essential vitamins and minerals (APEDA). These attributes make millets an ideal food choice for those managing diabetes. Moreover, numerous studies suggest that millets possess anti-diabetic properties, contributing to better control of blood sugar levels and the prevention of various diabetes-related complications. Their high fiber content and low glycemic index support stable blood glucose levels, while their antioxidant properties help reduce oxidative stress associated with chronic conditions like diabetes (Kannan, 2010; Choi et al., 2005). Given their nutritional benefits, millets present a promising dietary intervention for managing diabetes and enhancing overall health.
