Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship between gratitude, materialism and sustainable development. There are remarkably positive things in our life and world, but the need is to bring them on focal point to construct a brighter picture of tomorrow. Positive Psychology emphasizes on the strengths of behaviour that can make a meaningful and purposeful life. It explains that the goal of life is not just surviving but flourishing, expanding. Gratitude results in increased social-support, altruistic behaviour, physical health, well-being, life-satisfaction, empathy, self-esteem and reduced aggression, stress, materialistic approach etc. We felt grateful to others if we have benefitted by their behaviour. Beneficiaries have a feeling to gift back to his/her benefactor. Mother Nature is one of the most prominent benefactors for all of us. By adopting the sustainable patterns of living we can pay some of our part of gratitude towards Mother Nature. Gratitude plays a significant role to reduce the materialistic approach. Gratitude and materialistic striving has just opposite effects on personality. During COVID-19 we all have seen that we required much lesser for living than we want to accumulate for different reasons. By limiting this approach, we can promote sustainable development which will prove an ultimate tribute to Mother Nature to show our gratitude towards all her assets which are a blessing for us.
