The impact of vinyl carbonate additive on the stability of V2O5/rGO composites as cathode materials in rechargeable aqueous magnesium-ion batteries

The influence of vinyl carbonate on the stability of V 2O 5/rGO composites as cathode materials during cycling in an aqueous Mg(NO 3) 2 solution was investigated in this study. The composite was synthesized using the sol-gel method, and thermogravimetric analysis revealed that the composite needed to be further dried at 120°C to achieve a water content of 0.4 moles per mole of oxide. The morphology of the composite was examined using FESEM and showed a rough surface composed of interconnected plate-like particles. The electrochemical characteristics of the V 2O 5/rGO composite were studied using cyclic voltammetry in an aqueous Mg(NO 3) 2 solution with the addition of vinyl carbonate. The results demonstrated that the capacity loss was reduced by 10% after the 10th cycle in the presence of the additive compared to the electrolyte without additive. This improvement in cycling stability is attributed to the formation of a protective film on the electrode surface due to the polymerization of the additive during cycling.
