The Consistency of the Karo Village in preserving the tradition: A case study in Tebing Tinggi City, Indonesia

Culture and tradition are recognized as distinct elements that are interconnected in the lives of all social groups. Through these cultures and traditions, characteristics distinguishing one community from another are identified. Communities are naturally adapted to their cultures and traditions in new habitats, often leading to the boundaries of these communities fading over time. However, certain community groups have been observed to consistently preserve these boundaries in new environments, ensuring their survival. This study was conducted to examine the consistency with which the traditions of the Karonese community have been preserved in Tebing Tinggi city, Indonesia. A qualitative approach was employed in the research. Data were collected through observations conducted in the Karonese village in Tebing Tinggi city, interviews, and library research. The analysis revealed that most Karonese have successfully maintained their traditions despite living among diverse social groups and being far from their native region. The traditions and cultures inherent in such identities could have disappeared and would leave only the ancestral marble behind the name as the last identity of the part of the family. This condition is undesirable to the people of Karo village in Tebing Tinggi city. While harmonious coexistence with neighboring communities is achieved, the Karonese community has ensured that their traditions, which serve as their identity, are not lost. To this end, various ancestral traditions, such as “Rakut Sitelu,” “Merga Silima,” “Tutur Si Waluh,” annual work, guro-guro aron, and traditional foods, have been collectively taught and preserved by the community. This study highlights the resilience of the Karonese community in Tebing Tinggi in preserving their cultural heritage amidst a multicultural environment.
