The Evolution of Bhakti Traditions Beyond Medieval India: Examining Post Colonial Adaptations of Devotional Practices
This paper examines the dynamic evolution of Hindu bhakti (devotional) traditions from their medieval Indian origins through their post-colonial adaptations in contemporary global contexts.Through analysis of primary textual sources, ethnographic fieldwork, and historical documentation, this research traces how bhakti practices have been reimagined, recontextualized, and revitalized beyond traditional geographical and temporal boundaries. The study reveals how devotional practices centered on divine love and personal relationship with deities have demonstrated remarkable resilience and adaptability across diverse cultural landscapes while maintaining core theological principles.By examining case studies from diaspora communities in North America, the Caribbean, and Southeast Asia, this research illuminates how bhakti traditions have become sites of identity formation, cultural preservation, and spiritual innovation. This paper contributes to scholarly understanding of religious adaptation in post-colonial settings and challenges simplistic narratives of either religious ossification or complete transformation.
