Pole-placement Based Controller Design for High Gain Quadratic Boost Converter

This work presents a controller design method for load voltage regulation of an enhanced gain quadratic type boost converter (EQBC) reported in literature. Firstly, the small-signal model defining the quadratic topology dynamics evolved, and then the control-to-output transfer function (COTF) is formulated. Detailed pole-zero analysis of COTF revealed that two dominating complex conjugate pole-pairs near the jω-axis determine the dynamic response and its specifications. In addition to complex conjugate pole-pairs, it contains non-minimum phase zeros which are responsible for sluggish speed of response. A single-loop voltage-mode type compensator employing a proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller is designed to control the load voltage using the dominant pole-placement technique. Dominance factor of 3 is used to place the poles at the desired locations. The efficacy of the proposed design is validated by considering a 24 to 100 V EQBC converter system. At first, the analytical design results are generated; subsequently, their validity is confirmed through the results obtained from the power electronic circuit simulator.
