Optimal Structural Robustness to Enhance Transmission Line Resilience for HILP Events
The increasing frequency and intensity of High Impact Low Probability (HILP) extreme weather events are posing significant threats to the resilience of power System. This paper proposes enhancement of resilience of transmission lines by determining optimal structural robustness by modifying material strength and design parameters under varying wind conditions. The Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) method evaluates the initial failure probabilities of transmission lines at different wind speeds. A robust optimization framework is formulated using an Interior-Point (IP) Algorithm to maximize the resilience level of the transmission system. The results demonstrated on IEEE 57-bus system shows that the optimized parameters significantly improve the resilience of the network, reducing the failure of transmission lines under different wind speed conditions. This study provides an insight into the measures to sustain the impact of wind by suggesting robustness of transmission lines against severe weather events.
