Adaptive Power Swing Protection for IBR integrated Power Systems based on Impedance Trajectory Tracking

Extensive integration of inverter based resources on the existing power systems considerably alters the power swing characteristics. Conventional power swing blocking relays fails to detect faster power swings caused by wind generation plants due to decreased system inertia. The impacts of integration of converter interfaced renewable plants like wind plants on conventional power swing protection schemes is analysed. The work proposes a new adaptive power swing protection methodology based on apparent impedance trajectory tracking. This method utilizes the inherent characteristics of apparent impedance trajectory during power swings to discriminate faults and power swings. Modelling and simulations are done using PSCAD/ EMTDC software on IEEE PSRC WG-D6 test system. The proposed method enhances the reliability of distance relays during power swing conditions.
