Hierarchical Clustering based Contingency Analysis Considering Renewable Energy Sources and Ancillary Services
With the proliferation of power grid interconnections and penetration of intermittent energy resources, the operations of modern power systems become more complex and dynamic. In addition, economic benefits and widespread transmission expansions have compelled the power systems to operate closer to their stability and thermal limits. If localized outages in one or more components of the power system violate the stability and thermal limits, the system may respond by a cascade of outages and even a system blackout. Therefore, contingency analysis has become a paramount tool for reliable and secure operation of power system network. The complexity associated with operation of such a larger network can be reduced by segregation of power network into smaller zones. So, in this paper hierarchical clustering technique is used to form zones and contingency analysis is done based on these zones. A case study is performed on the IEEE 14-bus system to show the effectiveness of hierarchical clustering based contingency analysis.
