Performance and Stability Comparison of Grid Forming Inverters with Droop and VSG Controls for Autonomous Microgrids
Grid-forming inverters have become a prominent topic due to the increasing penetration of Distributed Energy Resources (DER). This paper presents a comparative study of two grid-forming inverters controlled using both identical and differing Droop and Virtual Synchronous Generator (VSG) controls, operating in autonomous mode. The comparison focuses on settling time, peak deviation and stability limit while ensuring equal active power sharing in a steady state. This paper concludes that the system operating with identical Droop control provides less settling time but is less stable as compared to the Droop-VSG controlled system. The analysis is conducted using MATLAB/Simulink.
