Minimum Overgeneration Capacity and Net Present Value of Renewable Energy Storage Hybrid System for the electricity demand of 2028-2030 in India

India must strengthen its electricity grid to accommodate 500 GW of renewables by 2030. To address the variability and intermittency of renewables, a grid-scale energy storage hybrid system would be the key source to balance the rising demand for electricity while ensuring grid stability. Therefore, the primary aim of this manuscript is to determine the optimum overgeneration capacity and minimum net present value required to develop and integrate a solar and wind-based energy storage hybrid system in India comprising of lithium-ion battery and dispatchable generation systems for the electricity demand of 2028-2030 in India. The novelty of the manuscript lies in the methodology adopted, which employs the unmet power demand criteria to determine the techno-economic feasibility and schedule of the aforesaid grid-scale energy storage hybrid system. The methodology adopted in this paper yields a minimum over-generation capacity requirement of 23.55% at a cost of 76.893 GBP/MWh to integrate a 500 MWh LiBESS with the then existing DGS for satisfying the electricity demand of India. The work done in the manuscript can help Indian policymakers revaluate, schedule, refer and decide future energy policies for hybrid grid-scale energy storage systems in India by providing a glimpse of the energy mix when the penetration of solar and wind generators is more than 500 GW by 2030.
