Application of virtual power plant technology in facility agriculture
Virtual power plant (VPP) is an innovative technology that integrates distributed energy sources (such as photovoltaic and wind power) and energy storage systems through information and communication technology to achieve intelligent energy dispatch. With climate change and the world's growing population, agricultural production, especially facility agriculture, faces challenges of high energy consumption and unstable power supply. Traditional centralized power grids are difficult to cope with the fluctuations in agricultural facilities' electricity consumption and the instability of renewable energy sources. Virtual power plants provide facility agriculture with a flexible and efficient energy management solution. This article starts from the components, functions, and roles of virtual power plants and analyzes their application in facility agriculture in detail, including the integration of photovoltaic and wind power generation, the introduction of energy storage systems, and the implementation of intelligent dispatching and demand response mechanisms. Through case studies, this article explores the actual application of virtual power plant technology in agricultural production in countries such as the Netherlands, Japan, and China, demonstrating its advantages in peak shaving, filling valleys, energy optimization management, and reducing energy costs. In addition, the article discusses the technical challenges faced by virtual power plant applications, including the integration of distributed energy sources with the grid, the stability of data collection and communication networks, the complexity of intelligent dispatching algorithms, and the high cost of energy storage technology. Finally, the article proposes the future development direction of virtual power plants, including the enhancement of intelligent level, breakthroughs in energy storage technology, policy support, and reform of the power market. The widespread application of virtual power plants in facility agriculture is expected to drive agriculture towards a green and intelligent transformation and achieve sustainable development.
