Three-Phase Off-Board Smart Bidirectional EV Charger for Peak Load Levelling

A huge adoption of Electric Vehicles necessitates advanced integration techniques with the electric grid to ensure grids’ efficiency. This paper focuses on a three-phase smart off-board bidirectional charger for Battery Electric Vehicles, capable of a seamless transition between Grid-to-Vehicle and Vehicle-to-Grid operations. The charger equipped with an innovative automatic switching mechanism is a significant feature that enables peak load levelling without compromising grid integrity. An LCL filter is incorporated to maintain high-quality sinusoidal grid currents. The design further ensures battery longevity and performance by integrating safeguards against overcharging and over-discharging. Crucially, this system empowers users by allowing them to select their preferred operational mode, independent of the battery’s State of Charge, thus offering unparalleled flexibility in energy management. This research advances EV infrastructure development, providing a scalable and user-centric solution that accommodates both individual and grid-wide energy demands.
