Collaborative Control of Gravity-Electrochemical Hybrid Energy Storage and Evaluation of Its Operating Characteristics
Gravity energy storage, as an energy storage system, is a novel type of energy storage system that converts mechanical and electrical energy using solid heavy energy storage media. Electrochemical energy storage, as a power-type energy storage device, has a quick response time. This research proposes a hybrid energy storage system that combines gravity energy storage with electrochemical energy storage to enable precise grid-side power demand tracking via collaborative control of gravity and electrochemical energy storage. A collaborative control technique for gravity and electrochemical energy storage is developed to accomplish the hybrid energy storage system's steady power output. Firstly, a hybrid energy storage simulation model was constructed on the PSCAD/EMTDC platform using the architecture of the hybrid energy storage system, which consists of gravity energy storage and electrochemical energy storage. Secondly, due to electrochemical energy storage responds quickly to changes in grid power, a collaborative control strategy between the two energy storage methods was proposed. This strategy compensates for the difference between the real-time output power of gravity energy storage units and the power demand on the grid side. Lastly, the effects of various power configurations of electrochemical energy storage on the operational parameters of the hybrid energy storage system was investigated, and the efficacy of the suggested technique was confirmed using the developed hybrid energy storage simulation model.
