Investigating the Impact of Noise on Transient-Based Fault Location methods in Lossy Transmission Lines
Transient based fault location methods have shown comparatively good results for lossy transmission line networks. In these methods the fault induced transient signal is correlated with the already computed modeled transient signals along the line. For accurate fault estimation the shape and characteristics of actual signal should match with the modeled signals. However, in practice due to several reasons this condition is hard to achieve. Noise uncertainty is one of it, which can impact the accuracy of the transient fault location methods. In this paper the impact of different potential noises are investigated to assess the performance of these methods, while simulating different scenarios on a single conductor overhead 100 km long lossy transmission line. The results show that there is significant location error under the influence of noise. The noisy impact suggests to propose new techniques in future for transient fault location methods under noisy environments to make these methods more robust and adaptive.
