Scientific trends and research networks on Apis mellifera honey: a bibliometric study (2018–2024)
Apis mellifera honey is known for its sensory, nutritional, and medicinal properties. But the evolution of scientific research on this product remains fragmented and underexplored. This study aimed to map the evolution of research on Apis mellifera honey, identify trends, and analyze scientific collaboration from 2018 to 2024. A bibliometric analysis was conducted using the Scopus database and VOSviewer software. Results showed a significant increase in publications, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, with Brazil leading in volume and international collaborations. University Putra Malaysia, the Federal University of Santa Catarina, and the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences stood out in scientific production. Co-authorship analysis revealed strong researcher networks, and highly cited articles focused on honey’s properties, authenticity, and quality. The most frequent keywords were “honey” and “Apis mellifera”, and six thematic clusters were identified: chemical and physical properties, biological effects, origin and production, safety and contamination, authenticity, and heavy metals. Despite advances, gaps remain regarding compositional variability, the need for clinical studies, and tools to ensure quality and prevent adulteration. Research opportunities include exploring new bioactive compounds, developing functional products, and promoting sustainable beekeeping.
