The Relationship Between the Presence of Mast Cells and the Gleason Index in Human Prostate Cancer
The prostate is an abdominal organ responsible for producing components for the seminal fluid. In men, prostate cancer is the most common malignant neoplasm. The Gleason scale allows a prognostic orientation concerning the degree of alteration in the histological architecture of the gland. The potential of mast cells to modulate vascular growth within the prostate gland and thus influence tumor growth has been described in several studies. Thus, this study aimed to determine the relationship between the number of mast cells in prostate tissue, age, and Gleason score.Histological studies were performed on 19 samples with prostate cancer to observe the alveolar and stromal tubule morphology.Statistical analysis of correlation and linear regression by Student's t-test was performed to determine the significance between the variables of age, Gleason score, and number of mast cells according to area. The results do not show a statistically significant relationship between the number of mast cells and the area observed, the number of mast cells and age, or the Gleason score and the number of mast cells per area. Finally, it is concluded that histo-morphological analysis in biopsies with prostate cancer confirms the presence of mast cells. However, no statistically significant relationship exists between the number of mast cells observed in the alveolar areas and stromal tubules and their relationship with age and Gleason score.
