A Sweeter Way to Learn Pelvic Anatomy: Proof of Concept for a Novel Abdominal Hysterectomy Model Using Candy [ID 1139]
INTRODUCTION: Obstetrics and gynecology (ob-gyn) trainees are experiencing increasingly limited exposure to abdominal hysterectomies. Reproducible simulation models are a needed adjunct in surgical education, but access to such models is often hindered by fiscal and time constraints. Our team developed an inexpensive hysterectomy simulator that can be utilized for trainees at any level. This pilot was performed as a proof of concept in a large, academic ob-gyn residency program. METHODS: This study was conducted among ob-gyn residents at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center during scheduled didactics. Residents were recruited to complete a pre- and post-survey assessing both clinical knowledge and surgical comfort with abdominal hysterectomies. During the simulation session, residents reviewed surgical considerations and relevant pelvic anatomy while constructing a three-dimensional model from candy. They then practiced the steps of an abdominal hysterectomy using the model they created. RESULTS: Twenty-eight residents participated in the session and 19 completed the pre- and post-session survey. One hundred percent of respondents felt that the model boosted their confidence in their surgical skills and knowledge. When asked what they felt was most useful about the session, the vast majority (16/19) said that building the model themselves increased their understanding of surgical anatomy. CONCLUSIONS/IMPLICATIONS: Each model cost less than 10 U.S. dollars and required minimal prep time, making it an inexpensive and reproducible way to review the three-dimensional nature of pelvic anatomy and enhance hysterectomy procedural skills. We plan to use resident feedback to improve on the current model and perform a multi-institutional simulation study further exploring its utility.
