From Self-Perception to Sexual Health: Understanding the Effects of Body Image on Sexual Behavior [ID 1675]

INTRODUCTION: Body image, or how individuals perceive their bodies, profoundly influences sexual experiences and overall health. The National Organization for Women reports that by age 13, 53% of American girls are dissatisfied with their bodies, rising to 78% by age 17. Understanding the connection between body image and sexual behavior is vital, as it affects safety, satisfaction, and well-being in intimate relationships. Despite its importance, this relationship remains underexplored. METHODS: A comprehensive search of PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane databases using terms such as body image, body identity, body appreciation, sexuality, female, and sexual behavior yielded 194 articles after screening. These studies focused on adult populations identifying as female, without disease or illness, and included articles referencing elective surgeries. RESULTS: Key factors influencing the relationship between body image and sexual behaviors include body surveillance, body mass index, relationship status, sexual orientation, and media exposure. Positive body image is associated with more frequent sexual activity, safer practices, and higher satisfaction, whereas negative body image correlates with reduced sexual activity, riskier behaviors, and adverse health outcomes. CONCLUSIONS/IMPLICATIONS: Many studies focus on isolated factors and do not fully capture the complexity of this relationship. Addressing these gaps is crucial for developing interventions that promote positive body image and healthier sexual practices. This review aims to provide health care professionals and educators with insights to promote sexual well-being. By fostering a nuanced understanding of body image dynamics, targeted interventions can enhance sexual health and overall well-being for sexually active individuals.
