Fabrication of multifunctional sandwich-structured electrospun magnetic film for preventing postoperative recurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma and abdominal adhesions

• The principal novel perception of this work centers on the fabrication of a sandwich-structured electrospun magnetic film functionalized with iron oxide nanoparticles and curcumin for the prevention of postoperative recurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma and abdominal adhesions. • Overall, a moderate novel perception is offered regarding the fundamental principles of novel essential materials, which are crucial for the broader applied material community. In this study, a novel multifunctional sandwich-structured electrospun magnetic film (MSEF) was developed to tackle the significant clinical challenges that faced after hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) surgery, namely, the recurrence of liver cancer and abdominal adhesions. MSEF was fabricated by electrospinning iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe 3 O 4 ) and curcumin onto an oxidized regenerated cellulose (ORC) substrate. The sandwich structure combines the hemostatic properties of ORC, the magnetic hyperthermia effect of Fe 3 O 4 , and the anti-HCC and anti-adhesion effects of curcumin. The in vitro and in vivo experiment results demonstrated that MSEF possesses remarkable hemostatic efficacy, significantly reducing blood loss in both rat and rabbit liver injury models. Furthermore, MSEF significantly inhibited abdominal adhesions in rats, as evidenced by reduced adhesion area and scores. In mouse and rabbit HCC models, MSEF combined with magnetic hyperthermia effectively prevented tumor recurrence, as confirmed by tumor recurrence rates, H&E staining, and TNF-α fluorescence staining. Additionally, MSEF demonstrated good biocompatibility and antibacterial properties, with no adverse effects on cell proliferation or erythrocyte lysis. Overall, this study introduces MSEF as a promising postoperative treatment strategy for HCC which can improve patient survival quality by ablating residual cancer cells, preventing recurrence, and mitigating abdominal adhesions.
