Impact of parametric controls and spatial flux distribution on the arrayed microwires of a giant magneto-impedance (GMI) sensor
Abstract The field sensitivity and inspection area coverage are key factors in developing low magnetic field sensors. A novel approach has been adopted in the parametric controls of a Giant magneto-impedance (GMI) based sensor with a linear array of amorphous microwires. The arrayed configuration displayed an enhanced GMI field sensitivity compared to a single sensor element. The larger footprint of the sensor for inspection due to this arrangement was evidenced from the greater magneto-impedance response towards the external magnetic field. An interesting spatial distribution of magnetic flux in an arrayed configuration of microwires was observed through COMSOL Multiphysics simulation. Joule annealing of the microwires, coupled with the array pattern, enhanced the sensor properties for potential low-field sensing applications. The arrayed sensor displayed a far enhanced signal output compared to a single-element sensor in detecting Earth’s magnetic field, thereby endorsing its scope for low-field sensing applications.
