Some notes about simulating nanoindentation with imperfect Berkovich tip

Abstract The article highlights the importance of correct treatment of indenter tip when modelling Berkovich nanoindentation. In order to account for tip imperfection, a novel analytical function describing the shape of Berkovich tip has been proposed. The parameters of the constitutive model were calibrated using experimental stress–strain curves. Simulations of Berkovich indentation with the same set of constitutive model parameters have been then conducted. An agreement between simulated and experimental stress–strain curves as well as load-displacement curves with a single set of constitutive model parameters has been demonstrated. Finally, the role of imperfection size and crystallographic orientation have been discussed.
