Effect of Propofol Concentration on Mean Arterial Pressure and Success of Laryngeal Mask Airway Insertion: A Randomized Controlled Trial"
Background: Propofol effectively suppresses airway reflexes for supraglottic device insertion but can impact hemodynamic stability, particularly mean arterial pressure. This study compares successful LMA insertion rates and mean arterial pressure (MAP) changes between two concentrations of propofol administered via a Target-Controlled Infusion (TCI) pump. Objective: To compare the frequency of successful attempts of LMA insertion and effect on mean arterial pressure of two different target concentrations of propofol in blood given by TCI pump. Methodology: A total of 80 patients of both gender undergoing minor surgery were included. Patients in group 1 were injected with propofol intravenously to achieve blood concentration of 6ug/ml and those in group received propofol with target blood concentration of 8ug/ml via TCI. Number of successful attempts and mean arterial pressures were noted in both groups. Results: MAP was significantly higher in Group A (96.98 ± 2.03 mmHg) compared to Group B (92.54 ± 1.79 mmHg) 5 minutes after achievement of target blood concentration of propofols, with a p-value of <0.0001. Conclusion: Lower concentration of propofol administered via TCI is associated with significantly lower drop in MAP compared to a higher concentration, without compromising the frequency of successful LMA insertion.
