Fluxos e tensões

This article is part of a research project aimed at analyzing the lifestyles and labor trajectories of graffiti artists in Belo Horizonte. Through qualitative research, particularly ethnography, including interviews with artists and participant observation, we seek to understand how graffiti artists interact with public space, cultural institutions, and public and private agents in the art world. By following the artists in their daily routines and analyzing their narratives about experiences in the city, we make visible socio-spatial boundaries that regulate and monitor public access to art and institutions based on social distinctions. The research findings indicate that graffiti is a social phenomenon that reveals social inequalities and mechanisms of exclusion, while also uncovering urban flows, possibilities for hybridization, and exchanges between urban peripheries and public and semi-public spaces.

Abstract

Through qualitative research, particularly ethnography, including interviews with artists and participant observation, we seek to understand how graffiti artists interact with public space, cultural institutions, and public and private agents in the art world. By following the artists in their daily routines and analyzing their narratives about experiences in the city, we make visible socio-spatial boundaries that regulate and monitor public access to art and institutions based on social distinctions.
