Development of a digital twin for the certification of railway machinery under Regulation (EU) 2019/779

The development of a digital twin for the certification of railway rolling stock under Regulation (EU) 2019/779 is addressed in this research. This regulation establishes detailed provisions regarding a certification system for Entities in Charge of Maintenance of railway vehicles, aiming to harmonize requirements and evaluation methods across the European Union. The proposed research focuses on digitalizing highly specialized technical services, particularly in the railway sector, leveraging digital twin models. These models enable the formalization and traceability of operations, which is crucial for ensuring safety and scalability in service development. The project, involving multiple entities, aims to transform maintenance services for railway infrastructure machinery to comply with safety regulations. Through three phases of development, it seeks to explore, test, and validate the digital twin model, integrating technologies, enhancing modelling capabilities, and expanding practical applications. The project’s innovative approach, especially its incorporation of Building Information Modelling technology, promises significant advancements in asset representation and data organization, fostering collaboration among diverse stakeholders. Overall, this research anticipates substantial benefits and future opportunities for applying similar digitalization approaches in various domains.
