Effect of zirconium diboride on mechanical properties and alkali corrosion resistance of enamel
Abstract Enamel is a composite material that combines corrosion resistance and high temperature resistance, widely used in industries such as chemical and pharmaceutical. However, its susceptibility to catastrophic deformation limits its application. To enhance the service life of enamel, enamel composite material samples were fabricated in this study. Different proportions of zirconium diboride (ZrB 2 ) particles were incorporated into the enamel, and the steel samples were processed through annealing, sandblasting, enamel spraying, and sintering. By comparing and studying the structure, morphology, flexural strength, fracture toughness, and alkali corrosion resistance, adding an appropriate amount of ZrB 2 can significantly improve the mechanical properties and alkali corrosion resistance. The addition of ZrB 2 results in a more compact microstructure within the enamel. Especially when the ZrB 2 content is 4 wt.%, the bending strength of enamel reaches its highest and the fracture toughness is the best; When the ZrB 2 content is 3 wt.%, the enamel exhibits the better alkali resistance, with a corrosion mass loss of 2.2 mg. In addition, adding ZrB 2 in moderation can effectively reduce the porosity of enamel and improve the bonding strength between enamel and metal matrix. The results of this study have important reference value for improving the quality of enameled products.
